Château Haut-Brion is located in the French commune of Pessac in the west of France. The winery belongs to the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is located in the Bordeaux wine-growing region.
The Pessac-Léognan appellation was only founded in September 1987. This means that all vintages before that belong to the Graves appellation.
With the first wine from Chateau Haut Brion - also called "Grand Vin" - the winery was included in the Bordeaux classification in 1855. Since then, the winery has belonged to the Premier Grand Cru Classé. Chateau Haut Brion is the only winery that comes from the Graves wine region but belongs to the Médoc classification. The classification of Bordeaux wine according to quality levels is intended to clarify the quality and price level of the wines produced.
The grape varieties Merlot (48%), Cabernet Sauvignon (41%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (1%) are grown on an area of around 50.6 hectares. Around 200,000 bottles of the "Grand Vin" and the second wine are produced annually. However, the second wine from Château Haut-Brion, "Le Clarence de Haut-Brion", does not belong to the 1st Grand Cru Classé. A white wine called "Haut-Brion Blanc" is also produced - 8,000 bottles annually. For this, the grape varieties Sémillon (53%) and Sauvignon Blanc and Gris (47%) are grown on an area of around 2.9 hectares.
