Tradition, precision and consistency in the Haut-Médoc
Château de Camensac is one of the lesser-known but highly regarded wineries of the Haut-Médoc appellation . Since its classification as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate has stood for consistent quality, meticulous craftsmanship, and the elegant expression of the Médoc terroir. It combines centuries-old tradition with modern winemaking techniques – a combination that makes Château de Camensac a hidden gem for lovers of classic Bordeaux wines.
Historical Roots and Classification
The origins of the estate date back to the 18th century. The name "Camensac" derives from the old Gascon language and means "situated by the water," referring to the estate's proximity to the small waterways of the Médoc. As early as the 19th century, Château de Camensac became known for its consistent quality and in 1855 received the coveted classification of Cinquième Grand Cru Classé – a seal of quality that continues to confirm the estate's high standards.
Over time, the winery changed hands several times, but its identity was always preserved. A decisive turning point came in 1964 when the Forner family from Spain – experienced winemakers from the Rioja region – took over the estate. Under their management, the château was extensively modernized, the vineyards were replanted, and the cellar technology was brought up to date.
Terroir and grape varieties
The estate is located on the western edge of the Saint-Laurent-Médoc appellation, directly bordering Saint-Julien, giving it a unique geological position. The vineyards cover approximately 75 hectares and rest on gravelly soils with a clay-limestone subsoil – ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot gives the wines of Château de Camensac structure, balance, and depth. This combination is typical of the Médoc and is known for wines that possess both elegance and longevity.
Careful vineyard management, precise yield control, and selective harvesting are integral to the winery's philosophy. The combination of tradition and modern technology allows them to create wines that authentically reflect the terroir.
Winemaking and style
Great precision is employed in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and structure. The wines then mature for 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels , of which approximately 40% are replaced annually.
The style of Château de Camensac is characterized by elegance, clarity, and a fine balance between fruit and structure. These wines require several years of aging to reach their full potential, rewarding patience with depth, harmony, and classic Bordeaux finesse.
Present and Philosophy
Today, Château de Camensac is run by the Merlaut family , who also own renowned estates such as Château Gruaud-Larose. Under their management, the focus has been placed more strongly on sustainable viticulture, biodiversity, and precise cellar work.
The result is authentic Haut-Médoc wines that honor the estate's tradition while meeting the demands of modern wine lovers. Château de Camensac exemplifies how consistency, a deep connection to the land, and meticulous craftsmanship lead to timeless quality.
