Historic elegance from the heart of Margaux

Château Ferrière is one of the oldest and smallest Grand Cru Classé estates in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc. Since its classification as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate has stood for authenticity, terroir-driven character, and refined, classic Bordeaux elegance. Despite its relatively small size, Château Ferrière is today one of the most distinctive representatives of Margaux wines – proof that quality does not depend on size.

Origin and history

The winery's history begins in the 18th century with Gabriel Ferrière , a respected wine merchant and member of a long-established Bordeaux family. He founded the estate, laying the foundation for a centuries-long winemaking tradition. Over time, the winery passed through various hands, but always remained true to its classic style and origins.

The official classification as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855 placed Château Ferrière among the great wines of Bordeaux. This classification remains a symbol of confidence in the quality and historical prestige of the estate.

In the second half of the 20th century, the estate came under the management of the Villars-Merlaut family, who also own other renowned châteaux such as Chasse-Spleen and La Gurgue. Under the current owner, Claire Villars-Lurton, a new era of renewal began: with great dedication, she restored Château Ferrière to its historical level of quality and established it as one of the most authentic voices of the Margaux terroir.

Terroir and vineyards

Château Ferrière lies in the heart of the Margaux appellation, surrounded by some of the most famous vineyards in the Médoc. The vineyard covers approximately 10 hectares – one of the smallest among the classified estates. This manageable size allows for extremely precise cultivation of each individual plot.

The terroir is characterized by gravelly soils over clay and limestone , which allow for excellent drainage and give the vines deep roots. These geological conditions form the basis for elegant, structured wines with an unmistakable Margaux character.

The grape varieties traditionally consist of Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Cabernet Franc , and a small proportion of Petit Verdot . For several years, the vineyard has been managed organically and biodynamically , which further emphasizes the character and purity of the wines.

Winemaking and style

In the cellar, meticulous precision is paramount. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, and each parcel is vinified separately. Aging takes place in French oak barrels , approximately 40% of which are replaced annually. This philosophy combines respect for nature with artisanal care – an approach that defines the Claire Villars-Lurton style.

The style of the wines is classic and elegant: Château Ferrière stands for wines with a fine structure, depth, and long aging potential. They embody the subtle power and aromatic finesse that makes Margaux one of the most prestigious appellations in the world.

Meaning and present

Today, Château Ferrière enjoys a high reputation among connoisseurs and collectors of classic Bordeaux wines. The estate has become a symbol of sustainable viticulture, female leadership, and respectful modernization.

With its clear signature style, its historical heritage and its return to natural winemaking, Château Ferrière embodies the future of Margaux – tradition-conscious, elegant and uncompromisingly authentic.
