Château Carbonnieux is located in the French commune of Léognan in the west of France. The winery belongs to the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is located in the Bordeaux wine-growing region.
The Pessac-Léognan appellation was only founded in September 1987. This means that all vintages before that belong to the Graves appellation.
With the first wine from Chateau Carbonnieux - also known as "Grand Vin" - the winery was included in the classification of Graves wines in 1953. Since then, the first wines (a white wine and a red wine) have belonged to the Cru Classé de Graves. The classification of wine according to quality levels is intended to clarify the quality and price level of the wines produced.
The grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (3%) are grown for red wine on an area of around 50 hectares. Sauvignon Blanc (65%) and Sémillon (35%) are grown for white wine on around 42 hectares. Around 300,000 bottles of the first wine are produced as red wine and 260,000 bottles of the first wine as white wine each year.
Château Carbonnieux produces two second wines. One second wine is called "Château Tour Léognan" and is available as both a red and a white wine. The second second wine is called "La Croix de Carbonnieux" and is also produced as a red and a white wine. In some years, a rosé is even made from this wine.
