Château Smith Haut Lafitte is located in the French commune of Martillac in western France. The estate belongs to the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is located in the Bordeaux wine-growing region.
The Pessac-Léognan appellation was only established in September 1987. This means that all vintages prior to that date belong to the Graves appellation.
With the first wine of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte—also known as the "Grand Vin"—the estate was included in the Graves wine classification in 1953. It produces red and white wines, but only the red wine belongs to this classification. Since then, the first wine has been part of the Cru Classé de Graves for red wines. Classifying wines according to quality levels is intended to clarify the quality and price levels of the wines produced.
Various grape varieties are cultivated on an area of approximately 78 hectares. For red wine, the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (6%), and Petit Verdot (1%) are cultivated on 67 hectares.
For the white wine, the grape varieties Sauvignon Blanc (90%), Sauvignon Gris (5%), and Sémillon (5%) are cultivated on an area of approximately 11 hectares. A total of approximately 200,000 bottles are marketed annually (including second wines).
The winery also produces two second wines, "Les Hauts de Smith" as a red wine, white wine and rosé wine and "Petit Haut Lafitte" as a white wine and red wine.
