Château Smith Haut Lafitte is located in the French commune of Martillac in western France. The winery belongs to the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is situated in the Bordeaux wine region.
The Pessac-Léognan appellation was only established in September 1987. This means that all vintages prior to that belong to the Graves appellation.
With its first wine – also known as the "Grand Vin" – Château Smith Haut Lafitte was included in the Graves wine classification in 1953. While the estate produces both red and white wines, only the red wine belongs to this classification. Since then, the first wine has been part of the Cru Classé de Graves for red wines. This classification of wines into quality levels aims to clarify the quality and price point of the wines produced.
Approximately 78 hectares are cultivated with various grape varieties. For red wine, 67 hectares are planted with the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (1%).
The white wine is produced on an area of approximately 11 hectares, using the grape varieties Sauvignon Blanc (90%), Sauvignon Gris (5%) and Sémillon (5%). Around 200,000 bottles are marketed annually (including second wines).
The winery also produces two second wines, the "Les Hauts de Smith" as a red, white and rosé wine, and the "Petit Haut Lafitte" as a white and red wine.
