Château d'Issan is located in the French commune of Margaux-Cantenac in the west of France. The winery belongs to the Margaux appellation and is located in the Bordeaux wine-growing region.
With the first wine from Chateau d' Issan - also known as "Grand Vin" - the winery was included in the Bordeaux classification in 1855. Since then, this red wine has belonged to the Troisième Grand Cru Classé. The classification of Bordeaux wine according to quality levels is intended to clarify the quality and price level of the wines produced.
The grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Merlot (30%) are grown on an area of around 53 hectares. Around 70,000 bottles of the "Grand Vin" are produced annually. The second wine of Château d'Issan, "Blason d'Issan", does not belong to the 3ème Grand Cru Classé. Around 70,000 bottles of this wine are produced annually.
Of the 53 hectares of vineyards, 22 hectares are used to produce a third wine - the "Château de Candale". This red wine is marketed under the appellation Haut-Médoc, around 72,000 bottles per year. In addition, since 1988, the vineyards declared as Bordeaux supérieur have been processed into another wine. This red wine is called "Moulin d'Issan" and 72,000 bottles are also marketed annually.
By the way: In 2007, 10 hectares of the Haut-Médoc appellation were added to the vineyard area of the Margaux appellation. As a result, it can be said that the amount of second wine produced will increase, but the "Château de Candale" wine will decrease.
