Château d'Yquem is located in the French commune of Sauternes in the west of France. The winery belongs to the Sauternes appellation and is located in the Bordeaux wine-growing region.
With the first wine from Chateau d' Yquem - also known as "Grand Vin" - the winery was included in the Bordeaux classification in 1855. Since then, this dessert wine has belonged to the Premier Grand Cru Classé Supérieur. This is the highest quality level in Bordeaux and for dessert wines alike. The classification of Bordeaux wine according to quality levels is intended to clarify the quality and price level of the wines grown.
The grape varieties Sémillon (75%) and Sauvignon Blanc (25%) are grown on an area of around 100 hectares. Around 100,000 bottles of the "Grand Vin" are produced annually. However, it should be noted that in bad years no vintage is produced at all and the grapes are used to make other wines. The second wine of Château d'Yquem "Y" does not belong to the 1er Grand Cru Classé Supérieur and is a white wine.
