Château Coutet is located in the French commune of Barsac in the west of France. The winery belongs to the Barsac appellation and is located in the Bordeaux wine-growing region.
With the first wine from Chateau Coutet - also known as "Grand Vin" - the winery was included in the Bordeaux classification in 1855. Since then, this dessert wine has belonged to the Premier Grand Cru Classé. The classification of Bordeaux wine according to quality levels is intended to clarify the quality and price level of the wines produced.
The grape varieties Sémillon (75%), Sauvignon Blanc (23%) and Muscadelle (2%) are grown on an area of around 38 hectares. Around 50,000 bottles of the "Grand Vin" are produced annually. However, Château Coutet's second wine, "Chartreuse de Coutet", does not belong to the 1st Grand Cru Classé. The winery also produces a white wine, which is marketed under the name "Vin Sec de Château Coutet" or formerly "Le Reverdon". In addition, in rare cases a selection is produced that bears the name "Cuvée Madame".
